Ever heard of the word Money Line and wondered what it really means? Well, here’s your answer. Money Line is used in sports gambling for placing bets on a winner of a game or tournament. For instance, these are most commonly found in sporting events such as boxing, tennis, soccer, baseball and hockey where the bettor makes a bet on the winner regardless of the margin or the point spread.

If you are a beginner to sports gambling and online sports betting you may first find it kind of imposing to make money line bets, but once you understand the essentials then it is probably easier to use the point spread. These bets are usually made on sports games where the point spread counts like NFL or rugby. It can’t be used in sports like auto racing and boxing.

Moneyline Odds for American Players

Sports betting in US has been around and practiced by many American gamblers for many years. Games such as boxing and horse racing were wagered on more often in the 1800s and today the popularity of baseball, basketball and American football bets has tremendously increased among US gamblers. Players wagered on the odds of basketball and football games which came to be known as betting the Money Line.

Basketball

Betting on basketball is considered one of the easiest. The game uses the point spread for placing bets on the teams as well as an under/over number. The most popular and common method of betting on a basketball game involves the point spread bet. The second popular method is making bets on totals which are also known as the unders/overs bet. Money line bets are placed on the winner of the game without making a point spread.

Baseball

Money line bets are more commonly used by sportsbooks for making baseball bets. These bets determine the amount of money laid out for a bet and the amount of money won when betting on the two teams. Here the favorite team is determined by the negative money line and the underdog or the opponent team is determined on positive money lines.

Tennis

Bets are placed on a particular ‘favorite’ player rather than the opponent due to the disproportionate chance of the favorite winning the match. Another way of betting in tennis is to predict a winner of each tournament before the tournament commences. It is good to have an idea on the player’s previous performances, strengths or weakness when deciding to make a bet.

American Bookmakers mostly favor these Money Line bets and thus it is often referred to as American odds. Positive figures in Money Line bets are the odds of determining how much will be won on a certain wager. Negative figures are the odds of determining how much should be wagered to win a certain amount. Money line odds have a negative value if the odds are not even and if they are even then the bets are positive.
